Rookie Mini Camp kicks off today in
Davie. All though we don't really get to draw many conclusions from this sort
of Orientation where rookies are handed there playbooks and off season
schedule, there is a few observations I’d like to make.
First and forth most I want to talk
about keeping reasonable expectations for some of these rookies. More
specifically, OLB Dion Jordan. Yes we
traded up to get him, and he was considered by many the best defensive player
in this draft class. However, he is very young and very raw. Jordan hasn't
taken his final exams at Oregon because of the Quarter system under which they
operate. What this means is that like Brian Hartline a few years back, Josh Kaddu, and Jon Martin a few years back he
will miss a key part of a players rookie season in OTAs. All though Jordan is a physical freak
of nature it’s unrealistic to expect Von Miller (11.5 sacks) or an Aldon Smith
(14.5) sacks rookie season. Patience will be a must.
For Cornerbacks Jamar Taylor, and
Will Davies it’s different. These two will get the same opportunities Sean
Smith and Vontae Davies got there
rookie years. The opportunity to have everything thrown at them and digest it
well enough to become starters. They are gonna have serious competition from
returning Cornerbacks Richard Marshall,
Dimitri Patterson, Nolan Carroll, and Jimmy Wilson. Davis, and Taylor have the
advantage of been cheaper, younger and considered the future. You would think
that if it’s even due to some of these vets bloated contracts the future might
turn in to the present rather quickly. On the other side of the token the Vets
know the Defense and possess NFL experience making it an interesting battle to
observe closely in camp.
Another position to keep an eye on
is TE. Reasoning behind this is that the only capable blocker on the roster is
rookie Dion Sims. His ability to block is precisely why despite having an arrest
in college h is on the roster. Ireland and Philbin
are very picky about having clean players on the team. Thing is that apart from
Eifert, Sims was the most complete TE
who can block in the whole draft. For that matter, in the entire roster to this
point. I would expect him to come in a lot along pass catcher Dustin Keller.
Sims also struggled with weight in college and it is said that he has lost
significant weight since leaving Michigan State.
Finally
RB, and Kicker will be important to. Daniel Thomas is on the hot seat due to
ball security, concussions, and other injuries. If former Gator Mike Gillislee is capable of holding on to the
ball and pass protecting some we might be seeing the last of Thomas as a
Dolphin. Caleb Sturgiss comes in with a
stellar reputation from UF as a very
accurate kicker. He is cheap and he might unseat Dan Carpenter who cost us at
least 3 games last year. Carpenter also has a bloated salary. So he might
consider taking a pay cut to even out the competition. All in all I think this
are a few things that will spice camp up this year and I'm certainly looking
forward to them.
